Wasted opportunities cost England – Johnson

Martin Johnson believes England were the architects of their own downfall in the 28-14 defeat to Australia at Twickenham.

England gave away 10 penalties which Johnson admits cost them dearly, but believes it was his side’s inability to create in Australia’s 22 that made the crucial difference.

“I don’t think indiscipline cost us. Yes we gave away too many penalties but that is not why we lost the game. The difference was we didn’t take out opportunities when in their 22.”

He added, “We got a lesson in how to win a Test match,” he said. They kicked their penalties and took their chances; we didn’t and wasted opportunities.”
