Jonny Wilkinson reclaimed the title of all time leading points scorer in the Premiership after helping Newcastle to a 17-3 win at home to Bristol.

The England fly-half scored two conversions and a penalty to take his tally to 1,486 points and overtake former Leicester man Andy Goode.

Bristol coach Richard Hill was unhappy with how his team performed but paid tribute to Wilkinson in his post-match comments.

“There’s no-one like Jonny when he’s playing behind a pack going forward and we contributed to our own downfall by making far too many mistakes. I can’t put my finger on why that happened and I’m at a bit of loss really after we played so well last week.”

After game the England fly-half commented, “It was great to get stuck in - it’s a great feeling and it’s what competing is all about.”

Jonny Wilkinson has been left out of the Newcastle Falcons squad for their first game of the season against Sale.

The England fly-half is still recovering from shoulder surgery and hasn’t played in any of the Falcons’ pre-season games.

England Under-18 fly-half Rory Clegg will be handed his debut and Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates holds no fears for the youngster.

“Rory is an extremely talented player with a fantastic temperament, he has dealt very well with playing two full games for the first team in pre-season and we look forward to seeing him transfer that on to the Guinness Premiership stage on Sunday.”
