Smith finally joins England set up

Brian Smith has finally put pen to paper on a deal to become the new England attack coach, after weeks of speculation.

The London Irish director of rugby become Martin Johnson’s first appointment as head coach and says he is delighted to be in board.

Smith commented, “The opportunity to coach at international level comes along rarely in one’s career so I’m looking forward to my new position with England. It’s an exciting time to be involved. I would like to thank London Irish for the opportunity the club has given me.”

Brian Smith is expected to be formerly announced as England’s new attacking coach early next week, ending his association with London Irish.

Irish are said to be unhappy at the manner in which Smith has negotiated his way out of the club, with news of  the deal going public some weeks ago.

However, the RFU are in talks with the club over a compensation package for Smith to buy out the one remaining year of his contract.

London Irish director interested in England

Brian Smith, the London Irish director of rugby has admitted for the first time that he would welcome the chance to take on a coaching role as part of the England set-up.

Smith is expected to be offered a position in Martin Johnson’s coaching team, which is likely to involve working with the backs.

Smith commented, “I’ve been very happy at London Irish for the three seasons I’ve been involved and I’d be happy to stay here for life, but occasionally a big opportunity comes up and when it does you’re forced to make a decision.”
