Wilkinson confident of Six Nations comeback

Jonny Wilkinson believes he can be fit and ready in time for the Six Nations in February, as continues to recover from a dislocated knee.

The Newcastle fly-half has been out since September and watched on as England suffered heavy defeats in the Autumn tests. However, despite the losses, Wilkinson believes Martin Johnson is still the man to build a successful England side.

“To think someone is going to achieve straight away without going through a period of learning and adjustment is ridiculous. I trust the system, I trust Martin Johnson, I trust the coaches and the players.”

I’d like to think I could come back (for the Six Nations). I’m always positive. I’m waiting to properly move around, which should be around January time.”

Jonny Wilkinson looks set to miss out on the Six Nations after it was revealed his dislocated knee will take longer to heal than first anticipated.

The doctor who operated on the England fly-half initially believed he had a 90% chance of being fit and ready for the start of the competition in February. However, it now seems Wilkinson won’t be able to step up to full training until March taking him out of the England picture.

Speaking to the Times newspaper, the Newcastle Falcons man says he is disappointed but will come back stronger than ever.

“This is the most debilitating injury I’ve had. But I’ll nail one thing: the idea this might be the end of my playing career. Forget it. It’s not a consideration.”

Jonny injury ‘upsetting’ - Johnson

Martin Johnson says he was tremendously upset to hear of yet another injury setback for Jonny Wilkinson, as the Newcastle Falcons man gears up for another long stint on the sidelines.

The England fly-half dislocated his knee in the match against Gloucester last week and will be out of action for up to 4 months.

Despite the injury, Johnson believes Wilkinson still has a major part to play looking forward to the Six Nations in the new year.

“It is very upsetting after the injuries he has had to get hurt again. But he’s a strong guy and we look forward to him coming back.”

Jonny Wilkinson will miss 4 months of rugby after dislocating his knee, but should be back in time for the Six Nations in February.

The England fly-half has already had the surgery he needs and is now recovering ahead of the lengthy rehabilitation process.

It is a disappointing setback for Wilkinson after he impressed on his return to the Newcastle Falcons side, becoming the all-time leading points scorer in Guinness Premiership history.

Wilkinson reclaims Premiership crown

Jonny Wilkinson reclaimed the title of all time leading points scorer in the Premiership after helping Newcastle to a 17-3 win at home to Bristol.

The England fly-half scored two conversions and a penalty to take his tally to 1,486 points and overtake former Leicester man Andy Goode.

Bristol coach Richard Hill was unhappy with how his team performed but paid tribute to Wilkinson in his post-match comments.

“There’s no-one like Jonny when he’s playing behind a pack going forward and we contributed to our own downfall by making far too many mistakes. I can’t put my finger on why that happened and I’m at a bit of loss really after we played so well last week.”

Jones delighted with Saracens victory

Eddie Jones, the director of rugby at Saracens was delighted with his side’s 44-14 victory against Newcastle Falcons.

Jonny Wilkinson continued his good form with 9 points but was unable to prevent Falcons slipping to a heavy defeat.

Jones meanwhile, believes that Saracens are playing the kind of rugby that will win games as it takes every advantage of the current rules.

He commented, “We had some control today and, with the way the game’s being played at the moment and the interpretation of the laws, you need that control. You’ve then got to be good enough to take advantage of your opportunities and we did that.”

Jonny stars in return to side

Jonny Wilkinson said he was just happy to be back in action after destroying Northampton with the boot in Newcastle’s 32-22 victory.

The returning Wilkinson scored 2 penalties, 5 drop-goals and a conversion to finish with a 22 point haul, his late 5th drop goal denying Northampton a bonus point.

After game the England fly-half commented, “It was great to get stuck in - it’s a great feeling and it’s what competing is all about.”

Wilkinson misses out on season opener

Jonny Wilkinson has been left out of the Newcastle Falcons squad for their first game of the season against Sale.

The England fly-half is still recovering from shoulder surgery and hasn’t played in any of the Falcons’ pre-season games.

England Under-18 fly-half Rory Clegg will be handed his debut and Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates holds no fears for the youngster.

“Rory is an extremely talented player with a fantastic temperament, he has dealt very well with playing two full games for the first team in pre-season and we look forward to seeing him transfer that on to the Guinness Premiership stage on Sunday.”

Jonny in-line for Newcastle return

Newcastle Falcons are confident that Jonny Wilkinson will be fit for the start of the new season, as he continues to regain fitness after shoulder surgery.

The 29-year-old fly-half needed the operation to repair cartilage and remains certain that he will be ready for the season opener against Sale on September 7th.

Steve Bates, the Newcastle Falcon’s head of rugby commented, “He has had a bit of contact work and the medical opinion is very strong that he will be fit for the Sale game.”
