Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Costumes (TMNT)

You guys, I’m SO excited to indicate you the Halloween costumes for my boys this yr!

They’re both fully obsessive about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (did you catch my 5 year old’s TMNT birthday party final month ) so it was a no brainer what they dress up as. And fortunately they both like totally different turtles!

Normally I am a last minute sort of gal getting these sorts of projects completed. This year my pal Amber, with Lotus Blossom Images, was providing up mini picture shoots for children wearing their Halloween costumes. I couldn’t move it up!! Normally Amber only shoots weddings, so when she gives to do family or child shoots I Leap on it! She’s superior! However the kicker The costumes needed to be ready by October fifth! Dude, I was so on that.

Ready for the tutorial Be warned! This post may be very photo heavy.
My boys love to observe the old TMNT cartoons that we have on DVD, so these costumes replicate those turtles, not the new version on television now. I just like the old style turtles better. They’re extra colorful, and extra harking back to my childhood. I remember my brother being obsessed with them when we had been little!

These have been pretty much a cinch to make, even for a novice seamstress corresponding to myself! When you have any sewing experience in any respect you will be able to knock these out in no time.

Little to no sewing expertise It is going to take you slightly longer but I promise, if I can do it you possibly can, too!

Provides:
a pair of sweats
yellow flannel
polyfill
bandanna
roasting pan
brown spray paint
brown ribbon
cardstock
VELCRO® Brand Sticky Again fasteners
needle & thread
masks and weapons

Unfortunately for me, green sweats in toddler sizes don’t appear to exist. Sooooo… I bought some white ones and dyed them green with Rit Dye! It was my first time utilizing Rit Dye, however I cherished Kylo_Ren it. I used Kelly Inexperienced. I should have left the sweats in the dye a bit longer as nintendo t shirt size guide quiz the colour wasn’t as green as I’d hoped for, but they still came out great! You’ll want to follow all instructions on the field.

Let’s start off with that muscle shirt, shall we
You can’t be a Ninja Turtle with out some muscles, and most of their’s seem to be on the chest!

You might want to make an oval out of the yellow flannel. The size will probably be dependent on the scale of your sweatshirt. Measure the entrance of the sweatshirt to find out the dimensions of the oval. To chop the oval, fold the flannel in half lengthwise, draw the corners of the oval on the material with a disappearing ink pen, then lower the material to create the oval.

Be aware: You can hem the edges of the flannel at this level, but I chose to not since it is a costume and not one thing that will be worn below shut scrutiny. 😉

Middle the oval on the entrance of the sweatshirt and pin it in place. Stitch three lines on the flannel: one up the center, and two horizontally across the length of the material. This will create 6 “pockets” in the flannel and create the look of the turtle’s chest.

Stuff the “pockets” with polyfill. Not too much, simply enough to puff up the flannel. Pin down the pockets and stitch around the oval.

Bam! Chest muscles for our turtles!
Subsequent up, let’s look on the arm and leg bands. I stitched these on so I wouldn’t have to manually tie them on every time the boys wish to put on the costumes. As a result of, let’s face it, these are going to be worn a TON for play, not just someday for Halloween!

I was able to make use of 1 bandanna to create All the arm and leg bands for one turtle. There may be loads left over to make a mask if you want to!

Minimize 5 three-inch strips from the bandanna. Fold over the edges to make faux hems. Iron them down so they stay in place.

For the knee pads, make the center of the strip slightly wider than the ends.
Knee pads: Pin the bandanna strip to the sweatpants roughly the place the knee can be when worn. Sew the bandanna to the sweats, leaving a 2 inch gap within the back that’s not sewn down. Tie the excess material right into a knot.

Elbow pads: Attach these bandanna strips exactly as you did the knee pads within the approximate space that your child’s elbows can be in the shirt.

Wrist bands: It is possible for you to to use 1 strip of the bandanna to make both of the wrist bands. Sew them on just above the hemline on the wrists of the sweatshirt. I only stitched as soon as around the base of the hemline.

Lastly, you can’t be a turtle, much much less a Ninja Turtle, without a turtle shell! Fortunate for me, I already had one executed as a result of I had used it as a prop for the TMNT birthday get together.

I found a 2nd smaller roasting pan for my little Michelangelo to make use of. As I acknowledged in the celebration post, I first painted the pans with green acrylic paint adopted by brown spray paint. The application of the acrylic paint allows the better adhesion of the spray paint.

Now we need to make a belt. I chose a large brown ribbon to use. Its not flashy and seemed turtle-ish…

Using an X-Acto knife, I reduce slits on both side of the shell about where a belt would go. I made the slit just contained in the rim and the same width as the ribbon. Run the ribbon by the slits and around the surface of the roasting pan.

I also reduce ~ 4 inches of ribbon and glued it close to the highest-inside of the roasting pan with hot glue. I added a VELCRO® Model strip to the top of the ribbon. The matching VELCRO® Model strip goes on the back of the sweatshirt. This will keep the turtle shell from drooping whereas on.

Time for the belt buckle!
I cut two pieces of grey cardstock in a three inch circle. I additionally reduce a bit of scrap cardboard in a three inch circle. Make a cardboard sandwich and glue the 3 pieces collectively.

While that dries, reduce out the preliminary of the turtle you’re creating. I used the identical grey cardstock as the belt buckle. I inked the preliminary with gray ink to make it just a shade darker. Glue it to the front of the belt buckle.

Time to attach the belt to the buckle!
Fold one finish of the ribbon over on itself and glue it collectively then glue it to the again of the belt buckle. Add a VELCRO® Brand strip on high of the ribbon you simply glued down.

Take the other finish of the belt, fold it over and glue it together. Add the other aspect of the VELCRO® Brand strip to the ribbon so that it matches with the primary VELCRO® nintendo t shirt size guide quiz Brand strip.

Add a small VELCRO® Brand strip to the back of all of the ribbon. The matching VELCRO® Model strip will go in your Ninja Turtles stomach in order that the belt won’t droop while on.

And now now we have our turtle shell and belt!
I might say, relying on how much the sweats price, you may make this outfit for ~$15 which is definitely cheaper than you can purchase the costume. We did already have the masks and weapons since my son obtained them as birthday gifts last month.

My Leonardo is in love along with his costume. My Michelangelo would rather play along with his Michelangelo toy than gown up like him, however I feel the outfit is growing on him. Hopefully by Halloween he’ll be able to put on it for greater than 20 minutes! But either method, do they not look absolutely adorable together

A huge thank you to Amber and Lotus Blossom Photography for allowing me to use these implausible photographs of my boys in their costumes! If you reside in the Nashville space and are planning to get married, remember to look her up!
