Newcastle full-back Matt Burke has been forced into retirement after declaring himself unable to fully recover from the serious knee injury he sustained.
The 35 year-old Australian, who has a World Cup winners medal to his name from the 1999 competition, has already been out for seven months and doesn’t see a way back from his torn cruciate ligament any time soon.
He commented, “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Newcastle. I look back on my four seasons and hopefully say that I contributed to the team’s performance and provided some enjoyment for the fans.”
