Vickery will play in final

Phil Vickery will play some part in the Premiership final for Wasps against Leicester after he was given the all clear from a knee injury.

It had looked like Vickery was struggling to make it for the game after  the club issued a ‘wait and see’ verdict on the England man.

However, Vickery commented on BBC radio, “I’ve fully trained this week and I’m down on the team sheet to play. All being well I’m looking forward to walking out the tunnel at Twickenham.”

Worcester swoop for scrum-half

Worcester have completed the signing of scrum-half Ben Jones from Doncaster Knights on a one-year deal.

The 25 year old former Northampton player teams up again with former coach Clive Griffiths and Mike Ruddock, the director of rugby at Worcester says Griffiths was the driving force behind the signing.

He commented, “Clive Griffiths was particularly impressed with him during his time at Doncaster Knights and if he turns out to show the same pedigree that Netani Talei has shown then we will be very pleased with his signing.”

Newcastle star forced to quit

Newcastle full-back Matt Burke has been forced into retirement after declaring himself unable to fully recover from the serious knee injury he sustained.

The 35 year-old Australian, who has a World Cup winners medal to his name from the 1999 competition, has already been out for seven months and doesn’t see a way back from his torn cruciate ligament any time soon.

He commented, “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Newcastle. I look back on my four seasons and hopefully say that I contributed to the team’s performance and provided some enjoyment for the fans.”

Wales relish World Champions test

Wales captain Ryan Jones is looking forward to the two tests against world champions South Africa at the start of June and believes his side have nothing to fear going into the games.

Speaking to the BBC,  Jones spoke confidently about both himself and the team despite the fact that Wales have never registered a victory against the Springboks on their home turf.

He commented, “We hadn’t beaten England at Twickenham for God knows how long before this year and I’ve always said that what’s happened in the past has no bearing on what happens next Saturday.”

All new for All Blacks

The All Blacks have named 9 new faces in their squad for the upcoming games against England and Ireland as they attempt to re-build their squad, following mass retirements.

Coach Graham Henry is also keen to introduce new blood to his team after the disappointment of missing out on World Cup glory last year.

Amongst the new players are the Auckland Blues trio of lock Anthony Boric, centre Anthony Tuitavake and wing Rudi Wulf.

Collins ends international career

Jerry Collins, the former captain of the All Blacks has decided to call time on his international career, at the age of just 27.

The Wellington Hurricanes forward played his last match for New Zealand in the World Cup quarter final against France in Cardiff last year.

Collins commented, “It’s something I’ve thought about for a while. I’ve played 10 years for one province and it’s hard to leave but it’s probably the right time.”

Bulls star joins Bath

Shontayne Hape has switched to rugby union and joined Bath from Bradford Bulls on a 3 year deal after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

The 26 year old, who has spent six years at the Bulls, admitted it was a difficult decision to make but the time was right for a change.

He commented, “The main reason was the opportunities rugby union can offer, but I also feel I need a new challenge. The best thing for me and my family is to move on.”

Betsen Signs For Wasps

Former France international Serge Betsen has signed a two-year deal with London Wasps.

The 34-year old flanker who retired from International rugby with France after the last world cup has penned a two-year deal with Wasps.

Betsen who won 63 caps for France said “I have signed for two years with Wasps, their past speaks for itself.”

Betsen who plied his trade with French side Biarritz for 17 years will hopefully link up with Raphael Ibanez, his former Les Bleus colleague, at Adams Park.

During his time playing rugby Betsen has been has gained a reputation as a fearless tackler and won the Six Nations three times, including two Grand Slams in 2002 and 2004.

“I have been at Biarritz for 17 years. Three years ago, I chose to extend my deal with sporting aims that have more or less been carried out, but I already had this desire to leave and discover other things,” Betsen said.
